Important study on cervical cancer

Today we tell about an important study made by the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona, Spain. The agency analyzed 10 000 500 cases of people who should be operated in 38 countries because of suffering from cervical cancer between 1945 and 2005. As a result the Institute could determine what viruses are the cause of this disease.

The results show that 90% of cases of cervical cancer is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). There are different variations of this virus, some of them more likely to cause this cancer. According to the study, the virus types 16 and HPV 18 have been the generators of the disease in 70% of cases.

By hazard as to trigger cervical cancer, these types of HPV are followed by 45 while further back are located types 31, 33, 35, 52 and 58. The next step for the scientists is trying to develop a vaccine to prevent infection of people with any of these 8 types of the virus. Also, "let the pap is replaced in the coming years by a test for the presence of any of these eight viruses," said Silvio Tatti, an Argentine physician who participated in the study in Spain.

Other information has been collected after the study is that these viruses have mutated through the years, which means that existing vaccines are still serving. In summary, the importance of this research is that they possess greater knowledge about the viruses that cause cervical cancer will be easier to develop prevention tools to halt the spread of this disease that affects 500 000 people annually and kills to 300 thousand per year.
